Chelsea tempt Terry with coaching role but skipper remains focused on playing career

Chelsea will offer to start grooming John Terry as a future manager when formal discussions over a contract extension begin.
The Blues skipper is currently taking his UEFA ‘B’ licence and has made no secret of his aspirations to go into management once his playing days are over.
His immediate future at Stamford Bridge remains unclear with his contract due to expire at the end of the season.

And Chelsea are keen on presenting the former England international with coaching opportunities within the club’s backroom set-up, primarily at academy level first, as an incentive to sign a new deal.
It is understood, however, Terry wants to stay fully focused on his playing career at the moment.
At the age of 33, the central defender has recaptured his best form under Jose Mourinho this season leading to calls for Roy Hodgson to reinstate him into the England set-up.

And while he does want to become a manager in the future, prolonging his top-level playing career remains his immediate priority.
Despite his distinguished career and hero status at Stamford Bridge, keeping Terry at the club will not be a formality.
It is Chelsea’s policy to offer players over 30 just 12 month extensions, but it is understood Terry wants a new two-year deal with an option for a further season.

Their refusal to budge on that policy was a key reason behind Didier Drogba’s decision to leave Chelsea in 2012.
And speaking last week manager Jose Mourinho, who will push his captain’s claims for a new contract, insisted he has no problem with the club’s over 30s policy.
