Everyone's laughing at United! Opposing fans rejoice at glorious, calamitous and hilarious decline of Red Devils!!..

Let’s start with a spoiler alert, to be fair to all those who have alighted on this article in the hope of reading some reasoned football argument.
No, this one’s written with all the prejudice of someone who pays for his season ticket, and it concerns the subject that has bound us all so tightly this season, whether we wear the red-tinted specs of Arsenal or Liverpool, Man City, Everton  or Chelsea-blue, or prefer to watch our football in black and white at Newcastle or white and navy blue at Tottenham: The glorious, calamitous and hilarious decline of Manchester United.
Kevin Keegan once intimated he’d love their downfall but, honestly, did anyone really think we’d enjoy it quite as much as this? One of the pleasures of my job on the golf circuit has become gathering in some bar with the ex-pats wearing their team colours. We’ve all been united - pun intended - in finishing the night in a state of collapse, not through too much drink but at the latest episode of haplessness.

One fan dialled 999 to call for Fergie

A drunken United fan called 999 and asked police to talk to ex-manager Sir Alex Ferguson about the crisis in form.
‘The result is all wrong. They had extra time and it was a total and utter load of rubbish,’ the male caller moaned.
‘I wanna report a crime,’ the caller added. ‘The crime is that Manchester United ... Manchester United ... were absolutely knackered.’
United have become so bad their away fans continue to sing when they’re 3-0 down. That’s the last resort of away fans who support rubbish teams, who do it to congratulate themselves on their loyalty.
We keep being told this transition period was inevitable given the mediocre squad with which David Moyes was bequeathed. Well, excuse me, but didn’t this mediocrity win the league by 11 points last season?
Man United, as usual, lapped my team Liverpool several times before settling for finishing just the 38 points ahead. One point per game! This season they’re six points behind. That’s not transition, that’s the most precipitous 22-game decline in football history. Indeed, ‘Moysie’ is looking like the parting gift from Sir Alex Ferguson to fans outside Old Trafford that keeps on giving. It’s certainly the first thing Sir Alex ever did for Liverpool.

What must he be thinking in his executive seat? Could you imagine a Ferguson side playing counter-attacking football at the soon-to-be-renamed Theatre of Dreams against the side sitting 19th in the Premier League, for heaven’s sake, as they did against Sunderland?
Of course, it’s not just the red half of Merseyside that’s doubled-up with laughter. Over at Everton, the School of Science, abandoned for so long, has finally re-opened for lessons and rediscovered a spirit for adventure. Line of the year surely came from the bluenose who proclaimed: ‘Well, it took 13 years, but finally Moyes has lifted Everton above Manchester United.’
It’s true Moyes has been dogged by horrendous luck. Who knew overrated ref Howard Webb would stop giving penalties to United the day Sir Alex left? Last week at Chelsea, they were undone by Samuel Eto’o scoring a hat-trick. He wouldn’t have been on the pitch if Webb had sent him off against  Liverpool, as he assuredly should have done for his disgraceful tackle on Jordan Henderson.
And what team could cope without combined talents such as Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney?
Theatre of Dreams? Former manager Sir Alex Ferguson (pictured) would never have played counter-attacking football against a team struggling at the wrong end of the table

Take Suarez and Sturridge out of my team, and they’d probably finish below Newcastle. But whenever fans of all clubs gather, it’s not these things we talk about.
Most of us have a sneaking admiration for Arsenal, and City taking over their neighbour’s mantle as the great entertainers; for Tim Sherwood in exposing AVB as the footballing pseud he appeared and the brilliant job Roberto Martinez is doing at Everton.  When it comes to Man U, alas, all sympathy seems to get left at the door.
Is it because of a manager who proclaims he tells his players not to dive and yet all of them selected in a forward position have adopted the Tom Daley position at some point this season? Or is it euphoria at seeing the Ferguson jackboot finally freed from the throat of referees?
Perhaps it is just the lot of the biggest club, when finally knocked from their effin’ perch, although I don’t recall such gloating outside the M62 corridor when Liverpool finally met this fate.

‘Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse…’ has become a  well-used refrain among the football-writing fraternity and it’s hard to see how it could, following the comical penalty shootout against Sunderland.
But we mustn’t give up hope just yet. After all, next up is the bottom club Cardiff at home… managed, lest we forget, by former United player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
That would do it, wouldn’t it?

Mata linking up with RVP and Rooney could bring the fear factor back at Old Trafford... but he's not the answer to all of United's problems!!..

  • Juan Mata is a magician of a player but Manchester United need more
  • David Moyes needs to rebuild squad... signing Mata is a good start
  • Spaniard linking up with Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney is exciting
  • The fear factor could be brought back to Old Trafford

  • After such a miserable season, Manchester United fans have been crying out for a hero. In Juan Mata, they might just have one.
With confidence at an all-time low after the Sunderland defeat, Mata’s signing is a glimmer of hope at Old Trafford.
He’s a magician of a player, has a fantastic attitude and he can thread a pass through the eye of a needle. He’s a match-winner, but make no mistake, he’s not the answer to all of United’s problems.
His arrival is a statement of intent but it’s just papering over the cracks at the moment.

United need an overhaul to get back to the top and they are still short of five or six top-quality players. With the likes of Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand all potentially leaving in the summer, it will be a big rebuilding project. But signing Mata is a good start.
When Robin van Persie joined, United had won nothing the previous year. He was the catalyst, the player who made the difference and fired them to the league title. Mata could have a similar impact and if he gets United into the top four, it will be just as big an achievement.
The problem for David Moyes is getting his players fit, because a team sheet with Van Persie, Mata, Wayne Rooney and Adnan Januzaj on it starts to look very dangerous.
I’ve always said  lining up in the tunnel at Old Trafford was nerve-racking because of the number of superstars they had. They miss that aura now but with those four they’ll be able to hurt teams.

People say he’s not a United player or doesn’t fit their philosophy but what is their current philosophy? Good players adapt and United can be flexible to get the best out of their attacking players.
They could easily go with a midfield diamond with Mata at the top of it behind Rooney and RVP, or he could play in a wider role. As long as Moyes restores his confidence he could play Mata anywhere across the front because he is expert at playing in between the lines.
In football we have very short memories. All it takes is a bad six months and suddenly you’re a bad player. That’s just not true with Mata. He played 64 games and scored 20 goals last season and was Chelsea’s Player of the Year, again. He has always been good enough for Chelsea, he was just never good enough for Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho is the kind of  manager who can make you feel a million dollars, but equally he can suck the life out of you with just a few words.
That’s what happened with Mata this season. Clearly he didn’t fit the Mourinho mould and he looked totally drained.
That’s not to say Jose is wrong, it’s just his opinion and if Chelsea win the title, his decision will have been entirely vindicated.
But now Mata has a chance to play regular football again and he will want to impress.
It’s up to Moyes to put an arm round him and get him back to his best, because an on-song Juan Mata is the first step towards getting the fear factor back at Old Trafford.
